Movie Poster Prompts: 40 Copy-Paste Prompts by Genre
2026-09-01

Most movie poster prompts fail for the same reason: they name a film. The model answers with a thin imitation of something you cannot legally use, and occasionally bakes a real studio's wordmark into the corner of your download. The prompts below never name a title. Each one describes the craft of its genre — the light, the palette, the staging, the finish — so the model builds the mood from scratch and the result is yours.
Paste any of them straight into the movie poster generator. They are grouped by genre so you can jump to the lane you want, and every one is written to leave empty space where a title would go.
How to write a movie poster prompt that works
Use a fixed sentence order. It matters more than vocabulary, because it lets you change one variable at a time and actually see what moved:
[subject] + [genre mood] + [lighting] + [palette] + [composition] + [texture]
Worked example:
Cinematic thriller poster based on my portrait, tense and restrained mood, hard low-key key light from the left, desaturated teal and charcoal palette, single centred figure low in frame with tall empty space above, fine 35mm grain.
Four things worth knowing before you paste anything:
Leave the title out. There is no title or tagline field, and the builder actively suppresses typography — rendered lettering is where image models fail hardest, and a poster with mangled text is unusable. Ask for negative space instead and set your real headline afterwards in any layout tool.
Say "based on my portrait" once. If you are uploading a photo, one mention is enough. Spending twenty words describing your own face competes with the photo rather than supporting it, and the likeness gets worse.
Pick 2:3 before you generate. That is the one-sheet ratio. The model composes for the frame it is given, so cropping to 2:3 afterwards eats the space you carefully left for a title.
Change one lever per attempt. If the first result is too evenly lit, change only the lighting clause. Rewriting the whole prompt tells you nothing about which word did the work.
For the deeper reasoning behind all of this, how to create movie posters walks through the composition rules, and how to turn your photo into a movie poster covers the photo side in detail.

Noir and crime thriller prompts
Low-key light, hard falloff, almost no blue. Restraint is the genre.

If this is your lane, classic mafia poster prompts goes much deeper on the crime-drama variant specifically.

When a prompt does not work
Three failures cover almost everything:
The face does not look like you. Usually the source photo. Use a sharp, front-facing, evenly lit frame where both eyes are visible. If that is already true, cut your prompt roughly in half — long descriptions push the model away from the reference. Some wardrobe and face changes on real people are restricted at the model level and no rewording unlocks them; when you hit that wall, switch to a direction that celebrates you as yourself rather than transplanting you into a costume.
The poster is too busy. You named more than one subject, or more than one style. Pick a single lane per generation. Two styles in one prompt is how you get mud.
The lighting is flat. Your prompt described what is in the frame but not how it is lit. The lighting clause is the single highest-leverage sentence in any of these prompts — it is what separates a snapshot from a one-sheet.
Make your own movie poster
Pick one prompt above, paste it in, set the ratio to 2:3, and generate. Do not refine — run three different genres and compare, because comparing across directions tells you far more than polishing a single prompt does. Your first poster is free, and every paid generation returns two different posters, so a few runs gives you a real spread to choose from.
When you have a direction you like, open the movie poster generator, upload your photo, and build it out.
